  1. If you can be yourself on stage nobody else can be you and you have the law of supply and demand covered.<\/li>\n
  2. The act is something you fall back on if you can\u2019t think of anything else to say.<\/li>\n
  3. Only do what you think is funny, never just what you think they will like, even though it\u2019s not that funny to you.<\/li>\n
  4. Never ask them is this funny \u2013 you tell them this is funny.<\/li>\n
  5. You are not married to any of this shit \u2013 if something happens, taking you off on a tangent, NEVER go back and finish a bit, just move on.<\/li>\n
  6. NEVER ask the audience \u201cHow You Doing?\u201d People who do that can\u2019t think of an opening line. They came to see you to tell them how they\u2019re doing, asking that stupid question up front just digs a hole. This is The Most Common Mistake made by performers. I want to leave as soon as they say that.<\/li>\n
  7. Write what entertains you. If you can\u2019t be funny be interesting. You haven\u2019t lost the crowd. Have something to say and then do it in a funny way.<\/li>\n
  8. I close my eyes and walk out there and that\u2019s where I start, Honest.<\/li>\n
  9. Listen to what you are saying, ask yourself, \u201cWhy am I saying it and is it Necessary?\u201d (This will filter all your material and cut the unnecessary words, economy of words)<\/li>\n
  10. Play to the top of the intelligence of the room. There aren\u2019t any bad crowds, just wrong choices.<\/li>\n
  11. Remember this is the hardest thing there is to do. If you can do this you can do anything.<\/li>\n
  12. I love my cracker roots. Get to know your family, be friends with them.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    I would modify this list for screenwriters–<\/p>\n

    1. We’ve been telling stories for eons. \u00a0There are no new stories. \u00a0The only thing that make you commercial (or unique) is your voice and your perspective.<\/li>\n
    2. How can you tell the story in a new way? \u00a0Don’t fall back on cliches.<\/li>\n
    3. Never follow the market. \u00a0Tell stories that excite you– not ones you think the market wants to buy.<\/li>\n
    4. Tell the market yours is a great story by how you tell it.<\/li>\n
    5. Don’t keep going back and rewriting old bits every day, just move on. \u00a0Finish the story. \u00a0Let the first draft be crappy. \u00a0Or you won’t ever have a first draft.<\/li>\n
    6. Just jump right into the story. \u00a0Don’t waste time with long introductions or back story.<\/li>\n
